Meet Our 9/11 Heroes at the Radisson Martinique

Leigh Gilmore and her mother, Faye, would have likely died in the 9/11 attacks if not for the quick thinking of two strangers.
"They are total heroes," Faye said of Greg Frederick and Arnulfo Ponce, two hotel employees who helped evacuate them from the World Trade Center complex.

On that day, the two women were among hundreds inside the 22-story Marriott Hotel, which was located in 3 World Trade Center in between the twin towers.
When the attacks happened, the Marriott's elevators and phones stopped working. Leigh, who has multiple sclerosis and depends on a wheelchair, had no way to escape. She and her mother waited in the hotel's fifth floor hallway as other guests fled.

"Everybody that came past I would say, 'Please tell them in the lobby that I'm up here,'" said Leigh, 50. "I felt like no one knows I'm here." An agonizing half hour passed, but still no one came to help Leigh and Faye.
Suddenly, with the situation growing desperate, Marriott engineer Greg Frederick appeared. He and his boss, Arnulfo Ponce, had helped Leigh with her room two days earlier. Despite everything that was happening around him, Frederick remembered where Leigh was.

"It was chaos," said Frederick, 43. "For some reason, I thought of Ms. Gilmore, and I had a bad feeling that this lady is up there."
Frederick used the hotel's freight elevator, which was still working, to bring the women down to the lobby. They separated, and moments later, the first twin tower collapsed on top of the hotel, decimating it. Faye and Leigh had barely escaped with their lives.

"Good Lord, these men saved our lives," said Faye. "They took the time to come and check on us. They could have easily just run for their lives."
In the years after 9/11, Frederick and Ponce talked often about Leigh and Faye, though they did not know the women's names or what had happened to them. The mystery haunted them.

"I thought they were dead, but I knew they had a chance of surviving," said Ponce, who was the hotel's chief engineer. "But I never heard from them."
It would be eight years before Ponce and Frederick would get their answers. Last month, they saw Leigh and Faye featured in the History Channel documentary "Hotel Ground Zero." "Tears started coming out of my eyes," said Ponce, 49.

The four eventually got in contact when the men flew from New York to Chicago for a reunion party at Faye's home. "I'm alive because of you!" said Leigh as she hugged Frederick for the first time.
There were tears and laughter at the reunion. And for these four people joined by fate, there was also a sense of relief. "It brought closure to emptiness inside my heart," said Ponce. "I feel like these two women are part of my family now."

Arnulfo Ponce and Greg Frederick, after their heroic endeavors during the World Trade Center attacks, joined us at the Radisson Martinique as part of our engineering staff. We are honored and privileged to have these two courageous men as part of the Martinique family.

Guide to NYC Tipping & Sales Tax

Photo: Methuselah Choi

Tipping Let’s face it. It’s not always fun to tack a few extra bucks of your hard-earned money onto a bill. But since New Yorkers in the service industries (hotels, restaurants and transportation) have tips factored into their wages, tips are expected and greatly appreciated. You don’t have to go overboard, but be sure to show the love for great New York City service. Here's how much you should tip:

• Hotel doorman: $1 for hailing a cab.
• Porters and bellhops: $1–$2 per bag.
• Housekeeping: $1–$2 per day of your visit, or as much as $5 per day.
• Wait staff and bartenders: 15–20% of total bill.
• Taxi drivers: 15–20% of total fare.
• Hairdressers: 15–20% of total service cost.
• Tips for other service personnel, such as theater ushers, tour guides and coat-check staff, are always appreciated.

One more thing: if you’re having drinks at a bar, bartenders typically expect at least a $1 tip for every drink they serve you. Later on, when the bar gets crowded, you’ll be glad that the bartender remembers you!

Sales Tax
Buyer beware: while the price tag may say one thing, prices marked typically don’t include tax. New York City sales tax on goods and services is 8.875%. But there are a few exceptions:

• No sales tax on food items purchased at grocery stores, or on prescription drugs.
• No sales tax on clothing or footwear under $110.

Summer Favorite Cocktail Recipe : Watermelon Martini

One of our favorite summer cocktail recipes... The Watermelon Martini

Ingredients:
¼ cup sugar
¼ cup kosher salt
6 oz fresh watermelon juice (I used a seedless watermelon so mixed it in my food processor and then strained it through a metal strainer).
2 & ½ oz good vodka
2 & ½ oz Limoncello or orange liqueur
1 oz fresh lime juice
Ice
Watermelon wedges for garnish

Instructions:
Chill 2-3 glasses in your fridge or freezer 10 minutes before making the cocktail.

Combine the sugar and salt and spread it on a flat bread plate. Dampen the rim of your glass with water or lime juice and dip it in the sugar/salt mixture. (Save the leftover mixture for another occasion).

Combine the watermelon juice, vodka, liqueur and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 6-8 times.

Strain and pour the mixture into the prepared glasses and garnish with a watermelon wedge.

The Radisson Martinique is getting "Frozen" for our Annual Children's Party

It's that time of year again and we are getting ready for our annual Children's Party this Saturday. For the past five years, the Radisson Martinique has hosted a party for children and their families living in homeless shelters across the five boroughs. This year's theme is FROZEN and it is sure to be a chillingly great time!

Construction of "Arendelle" has begun on the banquet level of the Martinique - complete with a frozen street fair and life size character stand-up figures.

Tomorrow's party will include games, Karaoke, arts & crafts, a sumptuous buffet, a live DJ and gifts for all children in attendance.

The annual "Dream, Believe, Achieve" party at the Martinique has proved to be quite a success in that it has given some of the older children living in City shelters the opportunity to intern at the hotel and assisted them in achieving their dreams of attending college.

From the Radisson Martinique to Your Table - Our Chef at Petit Poluet shares his recipe for Bouillabaisse

This classic Provençal seafood stew is loaded with clams, lobster and fish in a broth delicately flavored with fennel and pastis, a licorice-flavored aperitif. "There are no real rules to this dish except to use what's fresh” says our chef at Petit Poulet.

Rouille:
  1. One 3-inch piece of baguette, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  2. 3 tablespoons water
  3. 2 garlic cloves
  4. 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  5. 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  6. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Bouillabaisse:
  1. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
  2. 2 leeks, white and light green parts only, thinly sliced
  3. 1 onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice
  4. 1 fennel bulb—fronds reserved, bulb cored and cut into 1/4-inch dice
  5. 4 garlic cloves, 3 coarsely chopped
  6. 2 tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  7. 2 bay leaves
  8. Pinch of saffron threads
  9. 2 tablespoons pastis or Pernod
  10. 5 cups store-bought fish stock
  11. One 2-pound live lobster
  12. Eight 1/2-inch-thick baguette slices, cut on the bias
  13. 3 Yukon Gold potatoes (1 1/2 pounds), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice
  14. 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  15. 2 dozen littleneck clams, scrubbed
  16. 1 pound monkfish, cut into sixteen 1 1/2-inch pieces
  17. 1 pound skinless red snapper fillets, cut into sixteen 1 1/2-inch pieces
  18. 1 pound skinless halibut fillet, cut into sixteen 1 1/2-inch pieces
 Preparation:
  1. In a mini food processor, sprinkle the diced bread with the water and let stand until the water is absorbed, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, cayenne and salt and process until the bread and garlic are coarsely chopped. With the machine on, drizzle in the olive oil and process until the rouille is smooth. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate.
  2. In a very large, deep skillet, heat the 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the leeks, onion, fennel and chopped garlic and cook over moderate heat until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and cook until they begin to break down, about 5 minutes. Add the bay leaves, saffron and pastis and bring to a boil. Add the fish stock and bring to a simmer. Cook over low heat until the vegetables are very tender, about 20 minutes. Discard the bay leaves.
  3. In a food processor, pulse the vegetables and broth to a coarse puree. Strain through a fine sieve set over the skillet.
  4. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the lobster and cook until it turns bright red, about 4 minutes. Drain and rinse the lobster under cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove the tail, claw and knuckle meat and cut into 1-inch pieces.
  5. Preheat the broiler. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet and broil them 6 inches from the heat for about 1 minute per side, until the slices are golden brown around the edges. Rub each slice with the remaining whole garlic clove and drizzle lightly with olive oil.
  6. Add the potatoes and cayenne pepper to the broth and bring to a simmer. Cook over moderately high heat until the potatoes are just tender, about 10 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Add the clams, cover and cook over moderate heat until they just begin to open, about 3 minutes. Add the monkfish, cover and simmer for 2 minutes. Add the lobster, snapper and halibut, cover and simmer until the clams are open and all the fish is cooked through, about 4 minutes.
  7. Set a baguette toast in each of 8 shallow bowls. Ladle the fish and broth over the toasts and top each serving with 1 tablespoon of the rouille. Sprinkle with fennel fronds and serve immediately.

October in New York City

This is the perfect time to visit "The Big Apple"

In the City that never sleeps, this is the perfect time to visit New York City with a stay at the Radisson Martinique  - The Halloween Parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and festive Holiday Decorations in December.

This Holiday season instills extra merriment:  dancing Rockettes at the Christmas Spectacular, held  each year at Radio City Music Hall, Ice Skating in a quaint setting at Bryant Park, George Blanchine's The Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet, and the amazing annual Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center - just for starters.   And since so many of our guests want to applaud a great Broadway Show, The Radisson Martinique is within easy walking distance to the theater district.

This season at MoMA see Toulouse-Lautrec's famous prints and posters,   or take in the Guggenheim which contains one of the world's finest collections of modern and contemporary art - including works by Monet, Picasso, and Polllck,  and while strolling on Fifth Avenue, don't miss a photo-op with Patience and Fortitude, the Lions guarding the New York Public Library.

And when you return to the Hotel,  enjoy the services at the Radisson Martinique, including the Martinique Café for a great grilled burger, or try the French Onion Soup and mussels at Petit Poulet French Bistro, our complimentary Business Center, all located on the Lobby Level; the Fitness Center on the Lower Lobby level, and Kum Gan Sang Korean Barbeque on the Mezzanine Level.  Also, please visit our PGA Gallery located on the 2nd floor of the Hotel
